About Us

The ‘Great Satilla Preserve’ was a coastal barrier island a mere million years ago. The Atlantic waves pounded seashells and silica into powdery sugar sand along ancient beaches. Towering dunes supported sea oats and other beach flora. Live oaks and longleaf pine forests dominated the old island’s interior. Sweeping river-laced marshes stretched west to the mainland.

Alas, a lot can happen in a million years. The coast crept eastward stranding The Preserve has a bit of exceptional high ground in a world of piney flats and swampland. The old river continues to meander past the toes of pre-historic dunes, her clear and coffee colored water licking the sugar sand into sweet little beaches at every bend. Giant cypress and swamp tupelo trees stand where sandpipers once skittered in search of tiny shrimp and salt water treats. Remnants of the Satilla River’s connection to the Atlantic are the twice daily rise of tidewater, come to visit the ancient island and pay homage to the phenomenal bluff rising 60 feet above the river.

The Great Satilla Preserve is a development approximately 2,500 acres alongside 5.5 miles of riverfront. This is the exclusive preserve of a select and fortunate few. Forty-five secluded lots and home sites are platted, all between 5 and 20 acres. All owners are equal members in the Great Satilla Preserve Property Owners Association, which administers the preserve and its amenities. Owners share in common a small community area with guest cabins, stables, and hunting areas in addtion to nearly 2100 acres held in conservation easement.

With the close proximity to the coast, the preserve more than anything offers peace and a sense of freedom that only a true wilderness can provide……..and all less than an hour from the coast.

Serenity – A very wise man once said, “No One is Truly Wealthy Who Cannot Claim His Time as His Own.” To make it in this world of hubbub and hurry, we all have to step back and take the time for renewal. A quiet morning kayaking on the river, walking, or riding on wooded trails, relaxing on one of the more than a dozen secluded sandy beaches, or simply sitting and unwinding on your veranda with a view of nothing but trees as far as the horizon……the preserve offers all this and more.
